Satemwa Estate Thyolo is a white tea that is grown and produced in the Thyolo District in the southern Shire Highlands. Established in 1923 at an elevation about 3,300 feet to grow both tea and coffee in the temperate climate, it is one of the few remaining family-owned tea gardens in the area, as most gardens have been sold to larger companies looking to produce commodity tea. This garden produces artisanal teas derived from experiments with the local cultivars of the tea plant that have been developed here over the decades - Bvumbwe, Thyolo and Zomba.
This tea is comprised of two-leaves-and-a-bud pluck from the Thyolo cultivar that have been naturally sun-dried. The leaves yield an infusion that is smooth, delicate, refreshing and light-bodied with sweet, grassy, and subtle floral notes.
