Satemwa Estate Thyolo is a black tea that is grown and produced in the Thyolo District in the southern Shire Highlands. Established in 1923 at an elevation about 3,300 feet to grow both tea and coffee in the temperate climate, it is one of the few remaining family-owned tea gardens in the area, as most gardens have been sold to larger companies looking to produce commodity tea. This garden produces artisanal teas derived from experiments with the local cultivars of the tea plant that have been developed here over the decades - Bvumbwe, Thyolo and Zomba.
The large, twisted leaves of this tea are crafted from a blend of all three cultivars grown in the garden. They yield an infusion that is medium-bodied, soft, balanced, and smooth with sweet, malty, and woody notes.
